DJ Amar - Mastering Your Mix
(music mixing workshop for dancers)
10am-12pm
Learn how to make an impressive sounding mix for your next performance using industry standard state of the art software that you can download free. With a few simple steps you can adjust bass, midrange and treble frequencies; cross-fade one track into the next or edit a track down to just the portions you need; adjust the volume on one song if it is noticeably lower or higher than another; add layers using beats and ambient melodies from other songs. This workshop will give an overview of key features and shortcuts to get yourself started, show you how to edit a track, use the fade in and out feature, add a second track, and make a mix using 3 songs with one piece of music overlayed on another so you can learn how to mix a continuous set with smooth transitions for your performances.
Sherri Wheatley - Combos and Transitions
1pm-4pm
Combos and Transitions: Learn interesting new combinations that really emphasize the “fusion” in tribal fusion bellydance. Develop techniques to make your combinations and choreography less predictable by utilizing different planes of space and exploring varied staging options. Strong emphasis is also placed on creating interesting transitions between combinations to make choreography more varied. Mini “workshop within the workshop” will consist of several exercises that will help dancers connect to their inner muses and learn effective techniques to generate new choreography. Workshop will conclude with a choreography composed of the various combinations and transitions we will learn in class.

MASON BACH

Toronto
based music producer/performer Mason Bach creates unity within an
immediate sphere of listeners by making sense of our modern aural
landscape. Using a hybrid of electronically generated soundscapes and
rhythms juxtaposed by live, modulated violin, Bach creates an awareness
of new music and sound amongst the greater population. Trained in
classical violin from the age of three and continuing to perform
regularly throughout his university years, the foundation was created
for a career as a Classical Musician. However, after obtaining a
mismatched pair of turntables and a dusty crate of early 80’s Electro
Pop and Classic house, his addiction to the rich sounds of Electronic
Music was formed. Bach chose to further his education by obtaining an
Audio Engineering and Technology diploma. Upon graduating, he has taken
extensive post-graduate courses, specializing in the implementation of
MIDI controllers and human interface design using Max/MSP allowing him
to explore the endless capabilities of sound created through electronic
circuitry and computers.
GURPREET CHANA [THE TABLA GUY]

http://www.myspace.com/thetablaguy
It
all started from banging his hands on pots and pans or anything else he
could get his hands on to hear and feel the beat. His grandfather Kesar
Singh Chana saw this enthusiasm and gave him his first Tabla set and
since that moment 29 years ago, there has been no looking back.Gurpreet
has been taught in the Punjab Gharana (style) from his Ustad Ji
Professor Parshotam Singh. His passion for percussion has taken him to
perform at many music concerts and festivals around the globe. From
constantly creating and collaborating amongst his peers, Gurpreet's
music has been repeatedly requested and more importantly remembered for
its distinctive sound and moving beats. This has led him to perform and
record with artists such as Nelly Furtado, Wyclef Jean, legendary UK
DJ/ Producer Bally Sagoo, Juno Award winning Kiran Ahluwalia, The
Bombay Dub Orchestra, Jorane, DJ Rekha, and open for Pete Rock and Lady
Sovereign.

DELHI 2 DUBLIN is a group of five multi-cultural musicians who mash up
electronica and world music, heavy on the bhangra, Celtic and dub
flavours. Fusing tabla, fiddle, dhol, Punjabi vocals, and electric
sitar with scorching electronic beats, the crew takes listeners on a
wild ride through global sounds and danceable rhythms.
Recently,
they finished putting together their second album Delhi 2 Dublin
Remixed, choosing some of their favorite producers from around the
globe to remix their first album with an emphasis on more bass, energy
and funk. They have rapidly established themselves as forerunners of a
new wave of cross-cultural club music.

BWB presents Nickodemus (NYC) Thursday March 5th!
Posted February 26th, 2009 by abdulsmoothHi people who like cool music,
The Beats Without Borders crew is very excited to present one of our personal favourites on Thursday, March 5th: NICKODEMUS. We play his music at all our parties, talk about his legendary 'Turntables on the Husdon' parties in New York City, and have been trying to get him to play for us for years. The stars have finally aligned! He'll be here in Vancouver with us next week, and we can't wait. The show will be a part of the Midforms festival, and will also feature local band Zimbamoto, beat-boxer Shamik, and a full crew of DJs and VJs.
For a little more about what Nickodemus does, click here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMtGAiZcw54
As you know, we are a small, locally run collective, and appreciate any help you can give in getting the word out! Please let us know if you'd like to come and party with us, and we'll leave some passes for you at the door.
Many thanks and hope to see you soon,
Tarun
THE DHOL FOUNDATION - Live DJ Set at Rich Mix
Posted January 13th, 2009 by clairenouvSat 31 January
7.30pm
£12, £10 concs
Led by the irrepressible Johnny Kalsi, this show features an array of musical styles: drum and bass, tabla, hip hop, bhangra…all delivered with great theatre and with more than a bit of Celtic influence doubtlessly gained from Johnny’s work with the Afro Celts.
Dhol drums are a traditional percussion instrument from the Punjab province in the north of India, from where Kalsi originates. He experiments with dance beats and electronic music, mixing with the traditional Bhangra style on his albums. UK born, The Dhol Foundation create an amazing and mighty sound with choreographed moves and a highly energetic and engaging performance.
