SURYA DUB--Bersa Discos, Taal Mala, DJ Vanka

Ends:
Sunday, November 23, 2008 - 3:00am

Description:

Special Guests:
Bersa Discos (Buenos Aires/SF)
Bersa is brought to you by Oro11 and Disco Shawn, two Bay Area DJs who moved to Buenos Aires (separately) and found themselves swimming in a sea of experimental cumbia mayhem. After hooking up in the Buenos Aires DJ circuit, the boys quickly realized that many of the local cumbia sounds were never being given a proper release. Bersa Discos was launched to change all that.

The first Bersa 12" was released in February 2008. Vol.2 dropped in June 2008, followed by 3 in September. If everything goes according to plan, we'll be releasing a new 12" every couple of months, although that's more of an optimistic estimate than a fixed timeline. Even though we're back home in the Bay Area, we're still operating on Argentina time and not much happens on schedule down there.

Taal Mala (Vancouver, lighta! sound, SUB-OSC )
Taal Mala is emerging as one of the major forces of bass from the Canadian Dubstep movement. Killing sound since ‘97, his music encompasses a mashup of dubstep, dancehall, ragga jungle, and techno with throbbing basslines, glitched out ragga vibes, turntablism, and complex riddim changes that will warp your perception of dancefloor music. As a member of the SUB-OSC and Lighta! soundsystems, Taal Mala has buried an excess of tin pan soundboys alongside The Bug, Kode9, Loefah, Rusko, Benga, Skream, Hatcha, Youngsta, Martyn… Get ready!

DJ Vanka (Belgium/SF, Worldwide, Misturda )
DJ Vanka has tapped into a vibe that clubs like Bar Rhumba in London have been promoting for years: organic and electronic Afro-Latin dance music. Vanka's hardly late to the game, though; he DJed for 10 years with Stellar Trax soundsystem, playing everything from reggae to drum 'n' bass. Now the Belgian native focuses his energies on the Worldwide crew (which includes DJs Wisdom and Ruben) and makes sure the Make-Out Room is packed with dancers every Saturday for Misturada (Portuguese for "mixed"). As Vanka works his way through a mix of salsa, samba, reggaeton, cumbia, Latin house, and Brazilian batucada breaks, the place becomes a sweatbox of swirling bodies. Surya Dub welcomes this stellar local treasure.
