ie07 NYC
On September 20th we held the first ever Indian Electronica Festival in New York and I'm so happy to say that it was a smashing success!
This was our third installment of the 2007 Festival series and I worked with our Advisory Committee to program the event uniquely compared to the previous summer sessions in Toronto and London – NYC was all about the Djs... well, we also had a couple of live acts but the plan entailed creating a comfortable social atmosphere where people could chill out, shake their rumps, chat or whatever else they felt like... more »

The following artists/groups performed at this installment of the Indian Electronica Festival:
Abdul Smooth
Having grown up between East Africa and Canada, Qasim Virjee (aka Abdul Smooth), brings a refreshing afro-cosmopolitan outlook on life to the mix. His music journalism and performances have crossed international boundaries in person and through indianelectronica.com – a community web-zine he founded in 2003 to provide platform and forum for the artistic talents of South Asians worldwide. more »
DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid
While prolific and highly regarded as a writer and conceptual artist, Paul D. Miller is probably most well known under the moniker of his "constructed persona as "DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid". Miller has remixed and recorded with a panoply of artists ranging from Metallica to Steve Reich to Killah Priest, and has performed in a uniquely wide variety of situations throughout the world. His latest CD - a compilation of classic reggage tracks - is In Fine Style, DJ Spooky Presents 50,000 Volts of Trojan Records!!!! more »
DK aka Bollygirl (AVAAZ/GOONDA)
New York-based producer/DJ/voxist/visualist & events suprema, DK redefines and refines the East Coast Bollygirl aesthetic. Stealthily residing on dex @ AVAAZ (the monthly event), heading up High Chai Records and producing tracks at the lab with the GOONDA crew in addition to curating clubwallah.com with ET's Dimm, this bgrrl never ceases to crash cultural and musical barriers, defy genres and challenge the listener via her continued efforts of spreading conscious clubbing and bringing AIDS awareness in South Asia through music, film, art & fashion. more »
Shaair + Func
Music with an intention and root in building a bridge across genres, stereo-types, countries, governments, race, and gender while praising and acknowledging the highest power of all, Love, is the foundation of this duo. Shaa'ir, hailing from a New York City Broadway Stage background, born to immigrant parents from Jammu/Kashmir in the United States, has been around the block in the performance and artist's circuitry, and came to India to flesh out an understanding of her Indian roots. What happened instead was mass-synergy. more »
Shamik
"I hear music in my head, and use the artform of beatboxing to bring it to life. I love seeing people's reactions when my basslines, synth melodies, or drum sounds make them move to the dance floor. I record music to give people something to listen to when they get home after a show. We live in a "seeing is believing" world, so first I grab the attention of my audience at a show. Then I keep their attention through my produced songs. My passions lie in spreading music, perform anywhere that I can, and to keep meeting other musicians."
v:shal kanwar
v:shal kanwar began his explorations into visual art & music nearly 20 years ago. as a performance installationist he has created paintings while sharing the stage with the likes of Freq Nasty, DJ Goldie, Karsh Kale, MIDIval Punditz, Sub Swara and Dhamaal Sound System. as a musician, he often plays live tabla, guitar and latin percussion over his dj sets, and has been a long-time resident selector with the worldwide Kollektiv crew, as well as founding DC's Global Groove and Sutra residencies. more »
